Firstly the most important news, Värttinä is the winner of the WOMEX 12 Artist Award. They will perform on Sunday morning, 21 October 2012, during the WOMEX Award Ceremony accompanied by a WOMEX Networking Breakfast, both open to WOMEX delegates only. WOMEX is important international professional market of world music of every kind. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. Secondly the Värttinä’s track ‘Ruhverikko‘ from UTU is on the new compilation album ‘The Rough Guide To The Music Of Scandinavia‘. This Rough Guide showcases some of the most adventurous sounds from the Scandinavia region, Finnish musicians also make a sizeable contribution to the track list of this album. Maria Kalaniemi and Timo Alakotila, Värttinä and Milla Viljamaa fuse flavours of Karelian, classical and electronic musics together into a tasty mix. Thirdly on 18 August 2012 in Vintturin Nuorisoseurantalo in Sysmä/Finland, Johanna, Mari and Susan will sing a cappella traditional Karelian songs and hits of Värttinä with accompanied of accordion and harmonium. Other planned gigs: 1 September – at Volokkarit Folk Festival in Oulu, Finland and 21 October – at WOMEX in Thessaloniki, Greece.
