Johanna Hytti (Virtanen) was discharged from the band

Värttinä will play concert this Sunday during WOMEX exhibition in Thessaloniki, Greece and this will be the last gig for singer Johanna Hytti (Virtanen). According to the Finnish Anna magazine, Hytti informed that the majority of the band members decided to remove her from the Värttinä. She notified about it, late Summer this year, on one of the band’s meeting. The record company Rockadillo of Värttinä notified the Finnish News Agency on Thursday, that company or the band does not comment on Anna’s magazine piece of news before the concert and prize division on Sunday in Greece are over. In the Anna’s interview Hytti talks about deceiving and the burn-out which has led to it after what happened. “I want to mention that Susan (…) has been my support during this whole crisis.” – Johanna said. Aho comment shortly “This is really annoying story”. Mari Kaasinen refuse to comment anything.

Johanna Hytti (Virtanen) joined Värttinä in 2001, sung and composed almost 12 years. She studied Folk Music at the Central Ostrobothnian Conservatory in Kokkola and Master of Music degree at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department in Helsinki. She is also harmonium, kantele and 2-row accordion player. Now Johanna is a professional vocal teacher and is specialized in childbirth singing. Fans of Värttinä heard her sensitive voice first time on „Iki” album in 2003. From this album came the most famous Värttinä’s ballad “Tuulen tunto” solo by Johanna.

“The band is a job but at the same time it is like the children’s playground. There one can say that I do not want to play with you any more. (…)” – Johanna clarified.

  1. But it’s a difference if there is a majority in a band to fire one member. There must be serious reasons for such a step. And the fact, if one member has some problems temporarely, can’t be a serious reason. Because the common sense in the band should be like the motto of the three musceteers: One for all, all for one! That makes a great band. So there must be more deeper going personal differences or different imaginations about the musical way and development. Another point of critics is the kind how differences or contradiction will be solved. At the kind of clearance you might see much about someone’s character. What has happened in Värttinä really is an annoying and sad story – from my point of view.

  2. VERY sad and annoying news… I can only hope my favourite singer will soon turn up with something new and amazing… we love you, Johanna!

(BTW this is not the first discharge that keeps us wondering, ‘what the hell’… but it is surely the most shocking one).

  3. Been a fan since Koko and have seen so many band members leave enough for three new Varttina’s, so this is no real surprise. The best band was years ago Koko Ilmatar period and this present lineup is not as strong musically, sad to see so much amazing talent just disappear.

  4. It’s awfully sad for me to learn that Johanna has left… She really was my favourite there… Good luck to you in future, dear Johanna!

  5. Same happened to other Finnish groups I know. Fire one person who grew up with the band and leave that person (or the one that initiated it) in a crisis. Name a few: Timo Tolkki (Stratovarius), Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish). But several major line up changes have already been made (think back to the pre-Seelinniko-era). I think they can move forward with Karoliina Kantelinen in the front to more succes, especially as the freshness of the songs are like the ‘Kokko’-era.
