Taivasranta – VIENA, 2015

Translation by Jevgenija Sorokina

(Värttinä – Taivasranta)

1: Set out I did, set I did across the lands,
Far away from home, where I was raised,
Set out I did, set I did across the lands,
From my dear home, from familiar gates.
To Karelia, to Viena my way did go,
Where I wandered in its lovely woods.
Through its vast woodlands all my way did go,
There under the sun I rested, it was good.
Chorus: Peace I found, peace I found upon these shores,
Of the glimmering river running free
Against the horizon; little houses by the shore
Are outlined beside the waters and the trees.
2: As the woods grew darker, the taller grew the trees,
Steepier, more rugged little hills became.
While across the open water misty clouds, they creep
Softly to the horizon, ’bout to tell their tales.
Chorus
3: See I did the land, and the landscape I explored,
Village houses, outlines so dark,
And the pines, hear I did their humming soft,
And the waves, singing ‘neath the stars.
Chorus
4: Silent village, silent street and gloom around,
Among these places, names I’ve always known.
Time, sweet time, it has slowly passed me by,
Weeks and years, many years have flown.
The path is nought but moss, like a carpet velvet green,
The fields are forest now, changed into woods…
Silent village, silent street and gloom around,
Among these places, names I’ve always known.
